The double coin knot is one of the best knots for beginners. It is beautiful, meaningful, and requires only one short length of cord. Once you learn it, you can use it as a pendant, a keychain, or the center of a larger design.

What you need

  • One piece of satin cord, about 60 centimeters long
  • A flat surface
  • Scissors
  • Clear nail polish or glue to seal the ends

The steps

  1. Fold the cord in half to find the center. Lay it flat in a loose loop shape, with the two ends pointing downward and the center at the top.

  2. Take the left end and pass it over the right end, then under, then over again to make a simple overhand loop on the left side.

  3. Take the right end and do the same on the right side, mirroring the first loop.

  4. You should now have two side-by-side loops that look like linked rings.

  5. Gently pull both ends at the same time, while guiding the loops into shape. The knot will tighten into two small coin-shaped loops side by side.

  6. Adjust the size of the loops so they are even and the knot lies flat.

Finishing

Trim the ends to your desired length. To prevent fraying, dab a little clear nail polish or craft glue on the cut tips. Let it dry before handling.

Tie the double coin knot in red for luck, in gold for wealth, or in any color that suits your style.
